Jamie Arpin-Ricci,
Great observation...We did feel a little conflicted by the ending...that lying can be a "good" thing. (!) :)

What I found most interesting about the film is that, in the end, the critique seems self-defeating. After all, without his ability to lie, would not the ending have been a much sadder story? At any rate, I appreciate your thoughts.

Peace,
Jamie

Thanks for the comments. I'd be interested in your thoughts about the movie when you see it. Come back and let me know. :-)

John,
I think I will try to see this. One point I took from your post is the danger of understanding "truth" solely in terms of "stating facts." Thus, all films are documentaries, etc. One great weakness of the fundamentalist mindset (which I'm sure Gervais is attempting to skewer) is its lack of imagination, its inability to see that truth can be communicated in ways other than "Just the facts, ma'am." Who would want to live in such a world? And yet this is exactly the way some people portray the Bible and the Christian faith. Am I catching on to something you are trying to say here?
