I doubt we truly grasp how hard it was for Joseph who would be viewed as a failed "righteous one," Jesus would be seen as a *mamzer* (illegitimate/bastard) and Mary's morality questioned (as seen in Joseph's plan to put her away (break the betrothal) quietly. All this in a shame-based culture!</description>
