My name in lights…woo hoo!
Jan 11th, 2008 by John
Last night the Baker Book House store on East Paris at 28th St. in Grand Rapids, MI hosted a book-signing. I was invited by Louis McBride to have time to speak about why I wrote Out of Print: A Novel and what I hope the book accomplishes. I read an excerpt and then had a time of Q and A (question and answer) with the folks who came. Many good and long-time friends, and new friends, gathered and we had a great time (I would try to mention them but I might forget some). I have the gift of unceasing blab. One friend I will mention is Jim Ruark, the editor for my first book Jesus the Pastor: Leading Others in the Character and Power of Christ.

How cool is that? Your book is at the top of my reading list come May. I actually have to turn in my final draft of the thesis April 28 so I’m just a little over 3 months to the land of free-to-read-anything-again!
Now…when are you coming out with your book of Poetry??
Susan,
I remember those days. Seminary heightens our love for reading, but you have to read those confound required textbooks. Oh the day when you read what you want! Get that thesis in. What, again, is your topic?
I’m not sure about a book of poetry. I just enjoy working with words–trying to express weighty things in the fewest words.
God bless!
John
my topic is the theological significance of the human voice in song (w/emphasis on community and sanctification as a community)
I share your love for words and for the same reasons… I wonder at the weightyness of such things uttered as, “I AM” and “GOOD” and “LET THERE BE…” Such weight transcends my creaturely nature, and yet, God has given us speech… What a gift! What a treasure! What …. terror!
Susan,
What an intriguing topic. Have you heard of “Sacred Harp” singing that grew out of the deep South? The sacred harp is the human voice joined with others in a community of praise.
thanks John — I’ll look into that!
